You take young people who are eager to use their skills to impress the world and earn a good chunk of change as pro-gamers, and pair them with corporate sponsors that are also eager to make a good sum of money, and sometimes these players get burned.
From a gamer’s perspective, it’s all too easy to look at an opportunity to be paid to play your favorite game “as a dream come true” and gloss over the legal details of a sponsorship contract. Fortnite player Turner ‘Tfue’ Tenney recently learned this unpleasant lesson and as a result, filed suit to void his contract with eSports team FaZe Clan, Inc. His legal battle is bringing much needed attention to the troubling trend of exploitative eSports contracts.
